Biology September 28 - October 2, 2015

Those cell projects were Fabulous!  I am very impressed with your hard work and imagination.  Isn't it amazing that each single cell has all of those structures with specialized functions?

This week we will learn about Kingdom Archaebacteria!  These creatures are also called extremophiles that live in harsh environments.  We will research three different members of this Kingdom and create a Power Point for presentation.

Vocabulary:
Prokaryote (organism with no nucleus, but nuclear material in cytoplasm)
Eukaryote (organism with a nucleus)
Autotrope (organism that makes its own food)
Heterotrope (organism that does not make its own food)
Unicellular (organism made of onecell)t
Multicellular (organism made of more than one cell)
Kingdom (there are six kingdoms of living things)
Taxonomy (classification and naming of organisms)
Aristotle (the first to form a classification system)

For Metric Monday, we will measure length in meters, centimeters, and millimeters.

Reading and History for Week September 28- October 2, 2015

This week for Reading and History we will study the Vikings.  We will read in our History Books, The History of US, about the Vikings.  We will watch several short films.  The children will decide on a subject they want to learn more about (concerning Vikings) and they will research and take notes on Chrome Books. Some subjects might be "Weapons", "Voyages", "Conquests", "Longboats", "Home Life", "Life of a Child", or they may choose a particular person to research.  Topics are not limited to those listed, they are just suggestions.
We will end this project with them presenting a poster and teaching others what they have learned from their research.  My plan is for presentations to be on Monday, October 5.  But, please be understanding that sometimes the children don't work as quickly as I plan, so we may have to extend that presentation date a few days or more.

When children present I look to see:

-How well they know their information.  Do they have to read their notes, or can they tell us what they know. How much eye contact is used?  Are they reading their presentation or are they presenting information from their heads.  How much time is spent on practicing their presentation.  Is this the first time they have practiced or the 20th time that they have practiced?

-How much time is spent on making the poster?  Did they scribble it the night before, or is it neat and pleasant to look at.  Are the letters basically the same size?  Does it have a title?  If pictures are drawn, are they drawn to scale, or do I see a small picture on a large poster board?

-How are their audience skills.  Do they fidget during another person's presentation, do they play with a pencil, or paper, or another object?  Do they pay attention while others are speaking or are they talking with another person during a presentation.   Are they learning from their fellow student's presentation or only interested when it is their turn to speak.

Progress Reports:
I sent my progress reports and Miss Lambden's progress reports home on Friday.  Other teachers have used other methods to send their progress reports home.  If, after reviewing the reports, you decide to you need a conference with me or Miss Lambdem about your child's grade, please send me or her a note telling us when would be a good time for you and I or her to meet.  If you are pleased with the grade and feel there is no need for a conference, could you please send a note telling me that also?  When I see your returned note, I will be sure you have seen the Progress Reports.

Thank you,
Lanelle Holbrook

Biology September 21-25, 2015

On "Metric Monday" we will practice the scientific method and learn how to measure liquid volume.  We will use graduated cylinders, beakers, and pipettes to measure in Liters (L) and milliliters (mL).  We will observe the meniscus and make accurate measurements.

This week in Biology we will complete a Dichotomous Key,  Last week you  were given a bag of assorted items and worked as teams to develop a classification system.  Now you  will take that a step further as you review your system and fine-tune it in a more thorough way.  We will learn about early classification  systems by Aristotle and later systems developed by Linnaeus.  This will prepare us to understand the modern classification of living things:  Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.

On Tuesday, you will have a vocabulary test on cells.
Also, this week we will enjoy your cell projects!

Biology September 7-11, 2015

We certainly enjoyed our special visitor last week - Hairy Face, the unfortunate tarantula who succumbed to the paralyzing sting of a bee!  He fit right into our lessons about the activities of all living things.  We were able to qualify him as he was made of cells, got food, digested it, excreted it, grew, moved, breathed in and out, responded to his environment, had a life cycle, and probably reproduced before his life cycle tragically ended!  He was quite handsome, and observing him under magnifiers was amazing.  He had a mass of about 6 grams.  We even spent some class time researching and recording information.  It was a teachable moment that we ALL enjoyed!

This week we will learn about the structure and functions of an animal cell - an amazing and miraculous adventure!

Vocabulary words this week are:
cell membrane
cytoplasm
nucleus
nuclear membrane
nucleolus
organelle
vacuole
mitochondria
ribosome
golgi bodies
