Reading and History for Week September 28- October 2, 2015

This week for Reading and History we will study the Vikings.  We will read in our History Books, The History of US, about the Vikings.  We will watch several short films.  The children will decide on a subject they want to learn more about (concerning Vikings) and they will research and take notes on Chrome Books. Some subjects might be "Weapons", "Voyages", "Conquests", "Longboats", "Home Life", "Life of a Child", or they may choose a particular person to research.  Topics are not limited to those listed, they are just suggestions.
We will end this project with them presenting a poster and teaching others what they have learned from their research.  My plan is for presentations to be on Monday, October 5.  But, please be understanding that sometimes the children don't work as quickly as I plan, so we may have to extend that presentation date a few days or more.

When children present I look to see:

-How well they know their information.  Do they have to read their notes, or can they tell us what they know. How much eye contact is used?  Are they reading their presentation or are they presenting information from their heads.  How much time is spent on practicing their presentation.  Is this the first time they have practiced or the 20th time that they have practiced?

-How much time is spent on making the poster?  Did they scribble it the night before, or is it neat and pleasant to look at.  Are the letters basically the same size?  Does it have a title?  If pictures are drawn, are they drawn to scale, or do I see a small picture on a large poster board?

-How are their audience skills.  Do they fidget during another person's presentation, do they play with a pencil, or paper, or another object?  Do they pay attention while others are speaking or are they talking with another person during a presentation.   Are they learning from their fellow student's presentation or only interested when it is their turn to speak.

Progress Reports:
I sent my progress reports and Miss Lambden's progress reports home on Friday.  Other teachers have used other methods to send their progress reports home.  If, after reviewing the reports, you decide to you need a conference with me or Miss Lambdem about your child's grade, please send me or her a note telling us when would be a good time for you and I or her to meet.  If you are pleased with the grade and feel there is no need for a conference, could you please send a note telling me that also?  When I see your returned note, I will be sure you have seen the Progress Reports.

Thank you,
Lanelle Holbrook
